Creating Wellbeing

We spend 90% of our time indoors which makes it critically important that we design and maintain our homes for health and wellbeing. An emerging trend – wellness real estate – incorporates this into design and development principles.

Designing for Health

Much of our health depends on how healthy our homes are. It requires knowing what interior environmental factors affect our health and how to design against them. Indoor air quality, for instance, is key to reducing stress, improving sleep and enhancing cognitive functions.

      HOW TO CREATE

      HEALTHY HOMES

There are so many factors that contribute to healthy interior environments – from paints, to cleaning products, furnishings to floorings, ventilation and humidity, as well as heating and cooling.

Interior environmental quality is important for our health and wellbeing. Home health solutions may include clean air and water, routine cleaning, daylighting, thermal comfort, reduced noise pollution, no clutter and waste management.

      Prescription for Healthy Interiors

      Improve Indoor Air Quality

        • Install high-efficiency air filtration (e.g., MERV 13 filters or higher) to reduce pollutants such as particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and allergens.
        • Provide better ventilation to minimize carbon dioxide (CO₂) buildup, which can cause fatigue, headaches, and impaired cognitive function by opening windows.
        • Use low VOC paints, natural flooring where possible and minimal carpeting. Install cabinets and furnishings that carry ECO or Green Labels.

      Improve Thermal Comfort

        • Reduce environmental exposures linked to cardiovascular issues, hypertension, and neurodegenerative diseases.

      Clean and Disinfect

        • Use disinfection methods to reduce airborne pathogens, thereby lowering the risk of respiratory infections like colds, flu, and even COVID-19.

      Adjust Lighting and Humidity

        • Lower humidity to improve sleep quality.
        • Improve daylight exposure and circadian lighting systems to help regulate sleep-wake cycles and reduce stress levels.
